Towse: views from the hill

September 28, 2010

October 6th! A celebration!

Can you see this?

Can you see what I'm seeing?

Now can you see what I'm seeing?

Found on the Port site — when I was checking to see what line sailed the Zuiderdam, currently docked at P27, down the hill — was this announcement:

San Francisco will celebrate the inaugural connection of a cruise ship to shoreside electrical power on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 11:00 AM, at Pier 27.

Please mark your calendars.

… which means that cruise ships docked at P27 will no longer have to keep their engines running, and spewing crap into our air, to have electricity while they’re in port. Hooray!

(The Zuiderdam, for those interested, is a Holland America Line ship.)

Raygun Gothic Rocketship at Pier 14

Our perambulations yesterday took us to Pier 14 and the party to celebrate the newest “temporary public art” installation, sponsored by Black Rock Arts Foundation. Gavin stopped by. The crowd included Burners in costume, or perhaps that’s the way they always dress.

Counting crows

The murder of crows shows up in late afternoon, after the pandemonium (squabble?) of parrots has flown off to the night roost. The crows hang out in the trees down near where Levi’s Plaza meets the Embarcadero when they’re not having “walking practice” on the roof of Levi’s headquarters.

Ah, yes. Walking practice. Crows sit along the railings and watch others walk around on the roof. They caw and critique (“Hey, Max! You’re knock-kneed again!” “You walk like Mrs. Crow, Stanley!”) and caw again.

Then they’re off in a big whirl of black wings, reminiscent of THE BIRDS. Minutes later, they’re back again, plotting to take over the neighborhood, as soon as they learn to walk properly.

The General John Pope leaves for Texas

This is the General John Pope, “the very last troopship to sail from San Francisco,” as Carl Nolte (may he write for years to come) wrote in his Sunday column earlier this month.

In Texas, the ship will be scrapped. And there goes a bit of history.

Breakfast of Champions

Leftovers for breakfast.

This is what we served for dessert when we had company over for dinner Monday. Fixings for this one grabbed from the refrigerator this morning and put together for breakfast. This is the last until I make more. …

Homemade cream puff, filled with homemade vanilla pudding, topped w/ a sauce made by nuking chocolate chips and a bit of butter. (The dessert Monday was a bit less slapped together.)
