Towse: views from the hill

August 25, 2010

Bye bye, Firefox. Hello, Chrome.

Running on Chrome until further notice.

The erratic, unpredictable, unreliable, inconsistent, irregular, changeable, intermittent, uneven, fitful, variable* whims (not to mention the crashes and hiccups and slowdowns and what-nots) of Firefox finally drove me away.

  1. I gave up on Firefox at the beginning of this year if not sooner. I hated to do it, but it had simply become unbearable.

  2. Above and beyond the connectivity and speed problems I had with Firefox, I had this weird hiccup where if I plugged my earphones in, I had to reboot Firefox for the speakers to disconnect and the earphones to engage and vice versa. If I unplugged my earphones, I had to reboot Firefox to get my speakers to engage.

Yesterday, his nibs asked if I had the same problem with Chrome. I hadn’t even checked! I was so used to the hiccup that I’d never even thought of it, and if I had, I would’ve been pretty sure that it was a Vista problem. Turns out it’s a Firefox problem.

The one, and only, problem I’ve found with Chrome (and it’s a known problem) is that my alt-click “show me the definition of this word” shortcut doesn’t work. And can’t. Google is using some proprietary what-sit and answers.com can’t deal with it. They say to go bug the Google Chrome guys. Oh, well.
