Saratoga Community Library
Measure N - March 2000
Ballot Arguments for Measure N
Ballot Argument in Favor of Measure N
Measure N will provide funding to renovate and expand our Saratoga Community Library. Our library was built to house 100,000 books and now holds 173,000 volumes and periodicals. There isn't enough space for more reference materials, quiet space and reading, or programs for children. Measure N earmarks new funding specifically for the renovation and expansion of the Saratoga Community Library. Measure N will:
- Provide space for more references, books, and periodicals.
- Upgrade wiring for computers, the Internet, and new technology.
- Ensure modern earthquake standards.
- Improve safety systems and access to fire exits.
- Improve lighting by replacing outdated lighting systems.
- Create additional space for children's programs to improve reading skills.
- Provide adequate seating and parking for library users.
- Improve access for people with disabilities.
- Maintain the Heritage Orchard and Community Room.
The Saratoga Library and its system are rated among the best in the country. However, no state or local funding currently exists to expand our library or make critical renovations. By law, Measure N funding is used for the expansion and renovation of our library, and NO money can be spent on administrators' salaries or benefits. Measure N funding will be monitored by a Citizens' Oversight Committee to ensure funds are spent properly and renovations are completed on time and within budget.
All money raised by Measure N is tax deductible, and every dime stays in Saratoga. Representatives of the Saratoga Library Commission, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, Saratoga Community Library Foundation, and civic leaders conducted a needs assessment to evaluate library services and develop a no-frills plan to improve our library. Our Library is one of the few resources that benefit children, families and seniors. Measure N ensures that our Library meets Saratogans' needs well into the future. Vote YES on Measure N.
